Middle School Students Build Community at Candlelight Ranch

Earlier this week, AJA’s 6th and 7th graders kicked off the school year with an unforgettable three-day trip to Candlelight Ranch near Marble Falls. This annual tradition is designed to foster bonding, teamwork, and personal growth through a wide range of outdoor challenges and shared experiences.

At the heart of every activity were the values of teamwork, leadership, and perseverance. Students participated in team-building challenges, including low ropes courses that required communication, problem-solving, and trust. Many were pushed just beyond their comfort zones, but with the support and encouragement of their peers, they excelled and discovered how capable they truly are.

Thanks to this year’s full lake—filled for the first time in years—students enjoyed swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing, alongside their favorite downtime activities like football, card games, and Monopoly. Between laughter and shared meals, friendships deepened and new memories were made.

The adventure culminated in high-flying challenges, including three thrilling ziplines, a climbing wall, and the formidable Canyon Cable Crawl. For some, the biggest test was spending two nights under the stars, sleeping in tents and adjusting to the sounds of nature at night—an experience that built both courage and resilience.

One of the most meaningful moments came Monday evening, when Dr. Robinson and Mrs. Hidalgo gathered students around the fire pit. In the quiet of the night, students reflected on their trip highlights and, in the spirit of the High Holy Days, shared personal goals for the year ahead. Themes such as being more positive, patient, and present resonated throughout the group.

By the end of the trip, every student had demonstrated courage, leadership, and teamwork—leaving Candlelight Ranch not only with incredible memories, but with a stronger sense of confidence, connection, and community.
