How can we take care of plants and animals? That was the driving question behind AJA’s first graders’ project-based learning unit — and they answered it in a big way.

Over the course of this PBL, students dove deep into the natural world. They explored life cycles (birds, frogs, butterflies), studied animal classification, investigated what different animals need to survive, and examined real environments — from desert ecosystems to classroom habitats.

Along the way, they didn’t just absorb information; they created. Students wrote original pieces: poems imagining life as a tiger or a butterfly, informational writing about what reptiles and dogs need, stories set in deserts and nature preserves, and personal reflections on conservation. Each piece was their own — authored, illustrated, and presented to an audience.

The unit culminated in a showcase of student work that included recycled art projects, nature art, animal sculptures, and wildflower creations. The hands-on component pushed students to think not just about what the earth needs, but what they can actually do — picking up trash, recycling, and treating the planet as something worth protecting.

These first graders didn’t just learn about being guardians of the earth. For a few weeks, they actually were!
