One of the things we try to foster here at AJA is a Growth Mindset in our students, as articulated by Carol S. Dweck in her book, “Mindset.” But what is a Growth Mindset, and how can education encourage children to develop one?
We asked Growth Mindset expert Hagit Segal, who will be giving a presentation to AJA parents on November 4th from 5:30-6:30 p.m. titled, “Nurturing Growth Mindset Through Mistakes and Emotions.”
Read our Q&A with Hagit below to get a taste of how good this event is going to be.
Q: What is a growth mindset?
A: A growth mindset is the understanding that our current abilities do not limit our potential. People with a growth mindset understand that through effort, learning, and persistence, growth happens over time. They embrace challenges, see mistakes as valuable lessons, and view failures as opportunities for personal development, deeper emotional understanding, and self-compassion.
Q: Why is it essential to understand a growth mindset?
A: Understanding a growth mindset is crucial to fostering resilience, adaptability, and a positive attitude toward learning. It encourages individuals to step outside their comfort zone and persevere through challenges. It also helps to improve problem-solving skills, emotional well-being, and long-term success.
Q: What do you expect people to learn at this talk?
A: The main goal of the talk is to give parents practical tools to connect with their children on a deeper level. We will discuss the importance of allowing children to make and have open conversations about mistakes and how to create that environment in the home. We will also learn about giving children the space to express and regulate their feelings.
