Celebrating Creativity and Community Through Art

Our AJA artists have been exploring the power of art to express individuality, celebrate differences, and strengthen our community! Across grade levels, students have been studying self-portraits and discovering how artists use color, shape, line, and detail to capture what makes each person unique.

First Grade

First graders explored self-portraiture inspired by artist Paul Klee, using rulers to divide their portraits into sections and creating abstract designs with bright blocks of color and pastels.

Second Grade

Second graders created self-portraits inspired by artist Mike Esparza and his bold Cubist style. Imagining themselves as superheroes and super citizens, they used vibrant colors and geometric shapes to showcase their unique features and the special powers they can use to help others.

Third Grade

Third graders carefully observed facial features and proportions, adding personal symbols and meaningful imagery to their self-portraits. Their artistic choices reflected their individual interests, personalities, and identities.

Fourth Grade

Fourth graders experimented with blind contour drawing, first practicing with pencils and then using drawing pens to capture their portraits. They also designed creative backgrounds to complement their drawings and explore new ways of expressing themselves through art.

Fifth Grade

Fifth graders studied their facial shapes, proportions, and features before using contour drawing techniques to capture their portraits. They then layered pastels and colored pencils to create depth, dimension, and expressive artwork reflecting their individual identities.

More Than a Picture

Together, these projects remind us that art is more than just creating a picture. It is a way for students to express who they are, appreciate what makes others unique, and recognize the important role each person plays in building a welcoming and inclusive community.

From bold geometric designs to expressive lines and carefully layered colors, each portrait tells a story that is entirely its own. We love seeing our students bring their creativity, personalities, and big ideas to life through their artwork!
