Our middle school students recently had the unique opportunity to learn from two visiting Israelis spending their gap year traveling across the United States to speak with students about Jewish identity and antisemitism. When a member of our community brought this opportunity to our attention, we were eager to welcome them to campus—and the experience proved both meaningful and empowering.
Through thoughtful discussion and engaging activities, our students explored what antisemitism is and how it can appear in different forms. They worked to distinguish between criticism of Israel and antisemitic rhetoric, developing a more nuanced understanding of a complex topic. The presenters also guided students in building a strong sense of pride in their Jewish identity, encouraging them to feel confident in expressing who they are.
Students examined a historical timeline of antisemitism, gaining perspective on how it has evolved over time, and participated in a hands-on geography challenge to better understand Israel’s place in the world. Perhaps most importantly, they discussed practical strategies for responding to antisemitic comments, equipping them with tools to navigate real-life situations with confidence and resilience. This impactful visit not only deepened students’ knowledge, but also reinforced the importance of identity, awareness, and standing up with courage and clarity.
