On July 4, devastating floods swept through Central Texas, destroying the Jonestown home of the Eliashar family—deeply valued members of the Austin Jewish Academy community. In the days that followed, AJA families, staff, and local Jewish organizations stepped up with overwhelming support, offering everything from donations and housing to meals, hugs, and words of encouragement.
That support has made a real difference. The Eliashars are now temporarily staying in a donated home, and their children—thanks to the generosity of others—have been able to attend summer camps and just be kids again. Most recently, the family received uplifting news: their offer on a new home has been accepted.
Much of the coordination has come from a dedicated task force formed by AJA’s PTO, Dr. Cate Robinson, and parent Mandy Clairfield, who have worked hand-in-hand with the family since day one. They’ve been helping meet both immediate needs and the inevitable surprises that come with starting over.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign launched to support the family’s recovery has now raised over $115,000. That generosity is helping to lay the groundwork—both emotionally and practically—for the Eliashars to begin again.
For those who haven’t yet had the chance to give or share, contributions are still being accepted here.
What’s Next: Summer KabShab for the Eliashars
On Friday, August 8, from 8:00 to 8:30 AM, AJA will host a special Summer KabShab Get-Together at the Shalom Austin Main Playground. Led by Dave Kaplan, this joyful gathering will feature donuts, ruach (spirit), and a strong show of community support.
All are welcome—friends, extended family, neighbors. It’s a chance to come together and show the Eliashars that they are not alone.
At the event, AJA will be collecting:
- Back-to-school supplies
- Basic household items for the Eliashars’ new home
- Thoughtful comfort items to help the children feel secure and supported
A detailed list of needed items will be shared soon by AJA PTO Chair, Alana Dugandzic.
Continuing the Work
As the Eliashars rebuild, the AJA community continues to show up—embodying the words from Pirkei Avot:
“You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.”
Every act of kindness, no matter how small, moves this beloved family forward. Together, AJA is proving what community really means.
