This basketball season was nothing short of historic for AJA’s basketball program, with our Varsity and JV teams leaving it all on the court. From thrilling comebacks to championship titles, the Lions demonstrated perseverance, teamwork, and unwavering dedication to the game.
Varsity Girls: A Legacy of Growth and Determination
The Varsity Girls Basketball team closed their season with a hard-fought playoff game against Magellan, marking the end of an incredible four-year journey. These athletes have been the foundation of AJA’s basketball program, helping the school rise by three divisions through their dedication and hard work. Their legacy includes winning the JV Playoff Tournament Championship two years ago and competing against some of the top teams in Central Texas this season. While the scoreboard didn’t always reflect their effort, their camaraderie, grit, and passion never wavered.

A special shoutout to Maya Kaplan, who made history by setting the record for the most career points in AJA Girls Basketball history. Coaches Dani Cohen and Bobby Schwartz praised the team for their relentless effort and the mark they have left on the program. Their achievements will forever be a part of AJA’s athletic history.
JV Girls: Champions of the District and Beyond
The JV Girls Basketball team dominated district play, finishing with an undefeated record and securing the district championship title. Their determination carried them through the playoffs, where they faced fierce competition.
The team edged out St. Andrews in a nail-biting 7-6 victory before staging a dramatic comeback against Paragon, winning 17-16 with a last-second play. In the tournament championship, they put up an incredible fight against Waldorf, finishing as runners-up with a score of 11-14. Their performance showcased their resilience, teamwork, and ability to rise to the challenge of a higher competitive level.
Throughout the season, the JV Girls demonstrated not only their athletic ability but also their commitment to each other. Their season was a testament to sportsmanship, perseverance, and the bright future ahead for AJA basketball.
JV Boys: The Ultimate Underdog Story
The JV Boys Basketball team made history with a stunning playoff run, defying the odds to claim the Tournament Playoff Championship. As the youngest team in school history, they faced early struggles but grew stronger as the season progressed. A crucial win over St. Andrews secured their spot in the District Playoffs, where their top-ranked defense helped them upset three powerhouse teams in a row.
The Lions stunned Paragon in the first round, then took down undefeated Trinity in the Final Four with a dominant offensive performance. In the Championship Game, their relentless defense forced turnovers against St. Andrews, leading to a 10-point victory and a well-earned championship title.

The season was filled with individual milestones as well. Coach Bobby Schwartz also made history, becoming the first district coach to win four basketball championships at four different schools.
