AJA Grandparent Interview: Lisa Friedlander

AJA Grandparent Interview: Lisa Friedlander

Rooted in five generations of Jewish life and community in Houston, Lisa Friedlander has spent a lifetime immersed in Jewish education, tradition, and connection. From her own early days at Beth Yeshurun Day School to her leadership in synagogue life and cherished travels to Israel, her journey now continues with deep pride as she watches her grandchildren thrive at Austin Jewish Academy. In this interview, she reflects on the meaning of Jewish identity across generations and why AJA has become such a meaningful part of her family’s story.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where did you grow up, and what has your journey looked like up to this point?

I grew up in Houston, Texas, and went to Beth Yeshurun Day School. I attended Johnston Middle School, Bellaire High School, and graduated from the University of Texas with a sociology major and a minor in Judaic studies. I took Hebrew as my foreign language. I was a member of the AEPhi Jewish girls’ sorority.  I married my high school sweetheart. We have been happily married for 45 years.

When my kids were in elementary school, I was sisterhood president at Beth Israel for two years.

I am a member of Cattle Barons in Houston, which raises funds for the cancer society.

I have traveled to Israel twice: once on a pilgrimage during my high school years and again on a Federation mission.

How has your Jewish identity or heritage shaped your life, values, or family traditions?

My Jewish identity has always been very important to me. I feel very connected to the Jewish community in Austin and Houston. It has always given me a sense of belonging to this incredible extended family. I love the concept of Jewish geography. I love celebrating all the Jewish holidays with my family and friends.

The last five years, we have been spending a lot more time in Austin. We divide all the Jewish holiday celebrations between the two cities.

What role has Judaism played in your family across generations?

My grandchildren are the fifth generation to grow up at Beth Israel in Houston. A perfect example of L’Dor va dor….. from generation to generation. My father-in-law of blessed memory was a past temple president. Our family continues his legacy as active participants in congregational life.

Why is Jewish education important to you, and what made you feel it was the right path for your grandchildren?

I treasure my memories from Beth Yeshurun Day School. I am still connected to many of the friends I made there as a child. I feel it gave a sense of belonging and security. I also attribute my day school upbringing to my strong love for Judaism. For all these reasons, I chose to send my kids to Shlenker Day School, and I am thrilled my 6 grandchildren are all attending Jewish schools.

How did you first hear about Austin Jewish Academy, and what stood out to you about the school?

My daughter taught at AJA for several years before starting a family. I learned AJA had a very  nurturing  faculty,  as well as a wonderful school philosophy for project-based learning.

What has your experience been like as a grandparent at AJA—whether through events, visits, or hearing stories from your grandchildren?

My experience as a grandparent at AJA has been very welcoming. I enjoy watching with pride as my grandkids make lasting friendships and enjoy a learning environment enriched with Jewish morals.

In what ways have you seen AJA influence your grandchildren’s growth, confidence, or connection to Jewish life?

In just a short time, I have seen my grandkids learn to recite Hebrew prayers and understand the meaning behind the Jewish holidays.  They truly love learning and look forward to school.

Are there any particular AJA programs, traditions, or moments that have been especially meaningful for your family?

Last year, the fourth-grade class had a science performance. I was very impressed by their informative speeches and their confidence.

What hopes or dreams do you have for your grandchildren as they continue their journey at AJA and beyond?

I hope the experience and enrichment at AJA will give my grandchildren a lasting connection to their Jewish identity.

Is there anything you’d like other families or grandparents to know about AJA or about the value of investing in Jewish education today?

Investing in your child’s education at a Jewish school is the greatest gift you can give them in this confusing world.
