The Magic of Reading Buddies

The Magic of Reading Buddies

One of the most anticipated moments of the week at Austin Jewish Academy happens every Friday afternoon, when Kindergarten and 2nd grade students gather for Reading Buddies. For the last 30 minutes of the day, the two grades pair up and share the joy of stories together.

But this program is about much more than books.

For our Kindergarteners, it’s a chance to experience the excitement of having stories read aloud by their “big kid” friends. In those moments, listening skills, vocabulary, and a love of reading quietly take root. The wide-eyed admiration of our youngest learners reminds us how powerful it is to be guided by someone just a step ahead on the journey.

Students find a comfortable spot to read!

For our 2nd graders, Reading Buddies offers the opportunity to grow as leaders. With each page turned, they practice patience, clear expression, and responsibility—skills that go far beyond the classroom. Guiding a younger peer through a story gives them confidence and a deep sense of pride in being role models.

And the benefits don’t stop at literacy. The room fills with smiles, laughter, and a spirit of connection as friendships form across grade levels. Younger students look up to their buddies, while the older ones discover the joy of being trusted and admired.

Every week, Reading Buddy Time reminds us of three simple truths: learning is joyful, relationships matter, and books have the power to bring us together.
